City data: software developer vs economic geographer

How does the design process changes with the advent of new algorithms for information collection? The issue will be discussed by the head of the analytical company and the IT consultant of urban designers

In the design process, a lot of input data is used. Professionals continue to collect the necessary information, but the algorithms for the collection have changed with the advent of modern technologies. Following the technologies, the design process itself is changing.

Evert Jaap Lugt is called the ‘Dutch Zuckerberg’, he represents a very unusual IT culture in Netherlands. At the same time, he develops the original software, such as the aggregator for social networks – Nimbuzz, which received the Best Mobile StartUp award, and he advises municipalities and large companies how to deal with the urban development issues. Alexey Novikov is the dean of the HSE Graduate School of Urbanism, the candidate of geographical sciences, the head and co-founder of Habidatum, which specialises in the analysis of spontaneous urban data, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Urban Economics.

Participants in the discussion IT expert Evert Jaap Lugt and head of the analytical company Alexey Novikov equally understand the modern city as the intersection of many information fields, but they work with this layering from two different positions. Novikov's company is primarily concerned with the analysis, and the Lugt team is engaged in synthesis.

Evert Jaap Lugt and Alexey Novikov will discuss how the process of making urban planning decisions changes with the advent of new information technologies.

The discussion will be moderated by the researcher Anastasia Smirnova – the director of the educational program at Strelka Institute (2011-2015) and the program director of the joint master program of Strelka Institute and the Higher School of Urban Studies HSE –Advanced Urban Design.

The discussion will be held with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
