Multipark and Vezelka embankment: How to make a comfortable public space

Learn what comfortable public space is and why every city needs it from architect Daria Paramonova, using the example of the new Belgorod waterfront

The river Vezelka divides Belgorod into two parts and passes along its center. However, the city has never been equipped with an embankment with descents to the water and sidewalks where residents like to walk. In June Strelka KB and the Belgorodoblproject presented a design for a new embankment. Pedestrian zone and bike paths, and places for concerts, festivals, and fairs are planned. Belgorod residents can already walk along the embankment, and soon they will be able to appreciate it in winter mode.

A comfortable public space is a place that people love and to where they will always want to return. This is the result of competent space planning, taking into account the needs ofresidents. Daria Paramonova, director of Strelka Architects, will speak about how cities react to large-scale upgrades and how citizens begin to treat the streets, embankments, and parks under the influence of these changes. She will talk about the experience of project planning from the inside using the example of the Vezelka waterfront: from historical research, to analysis of pedestrian routes and transport, and to in-depth interviews with residents.

Daria Paramonova is the general director of the architectural bureau Strelka Architects. She was the head of the Moscow Garden Ring and the New Arbat Street improvement projects, as well as similar projects in Yekaterinburg, Tomsk, Samara, and other Russian cities. A former teacher and graduate of Strelka Institute educational programme, she has researched and typologized Luzhkov's architecture (her essay is entitled ‘Mushrooms, mutants and others: the architecture of the Luzhkov era’) and supervised the Russian pavilion at the XV International Architectural Biennale in Venice.
