Citizen Jane: Battle for the City. Screening

Urban blockbuster about the legendary Jane Jacobs, who first started to protect the residential neighborhoods of New York and defeated developers with their towers and highways

A film about journalist and author of the book ‘The Life and Death of American Cities’ Jane Jacobs, who in the 1950s changed the approach to designing cities. Jacobs talked about the everyday life that building magnates in the twentieth century swept away without even noticing. Instead of ‘clearing’ the slums, she proposed paying attention to local communities, carrying out research, and replacing demolition with reconstruction.

The film tells the story of the confrontation between Jacobs and the main New York developer, Robert Moses. The activist not only beat the system, but she also explained to urban dwellers what the special ’magic’ of a place is and what makes a city special. Watching this film is another opportunity to think about preserving historical quarters, parks, and even samostroy as part of an informal city.
