Heritage Preservation

The future of heritage preservation thus will be defined by two phenomena now gaining importance. The first is sustainability, understood as the ability of heritage not to be destroyed over time. The second is preservation of intangible heritage—protection not only of the physical evidence of the past, but also of ephemeral samples of endangered culture.

This project tries to imagine the center of Moscow under these two new conditions. How will manipulating the collective memory—the most Russia-relevant aspect of intangible heritage—change the life of Moscow in the future? How will a sustainable approach to heritage preservation change the practice of protecting physical monuments, from the ancient tsarist buildings to examples of Soviet modernism?
