The founders of the architectural bureau Ensamble Studio and research laboratory POPlab (Prototypes of Prefabrication Laboratory) at MIT Anton Garcia Abril-Mesa and Debora Mesa will explain why do we need a 3D models in architecture, and how to work with them.
The series of urban prototypes - named SUPRAEXTRUCTURES - that build three-dimensional urban grids, where structure and infrastructure meet, and where - as in the empty plots of a city grid - many architectures can take place over time and according to needs, involving different agents in the process. These urban systems are able to adapt to different contexts and programs, taking into account preexisting urban conditions, activating underused spaces, or urban voids, and enabling new patterns of growth over already developed plots and mobility lines. A new concept of openness and flexibility is thus proposed and provokes, as a result, architectures that are more public, shared, transparent, constructively honest, economic, efficient and social.
Antón García-Abril is a European PhD Architect, full-professor at the School of Architecture and Planning of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), and he is currently developing a second doctoral thesis about «Stressed Mass» at the School of Civil Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. He has been curator of the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale presenting «Spainlab».
