Right now even scientists can't estimate what the world will look like when polar ice caps melt, so maybe instead of panicking about climate change, we should all take a deep breath, put our heads together, and figure out how to mitigate its consequences. The message of the of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report released fall 2018 was that it is possible to stay in 1,5 celsius global warming, but there needs to be significant steps taken immediately at all sectors, also education. This is a firm belief of Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund that promotes the circular economy and waste-free manufacturing.

In her presentation, Jenna Lähdemäki-Pekkinen will explain how to make a transformation to a society that operates within the planetary boundaries in a sustainable way and how education system should enable individuals to address twenty-first century challenges to encourage sustainability and human well-being. According to Lähdemäki-Pekkinen, we cannot find the needed solutions by only using analytical thinking, but also need intuitive thinking and empathy.

She is one of the writers of the bookSustainability, Human Well-Being and the Future of Educationpublished in 2017 focuses on educational models of the future.
