Typographic experimentation is an essential part of the practice of London-based design studio SPIN. Designers arrange workshops where they test new materials, try unusual techniques, and create concepts of logos and corporate identity using anything that happens to be at hand. To give you an idea, the SPIN team turned 10 thick lines into identity & marketing materials for the University for the Creative Arts and transformed crumpled foil into fascinating typography for Apple.
Now you have the chance to get to know SPIN’s extraordinary approach better, and to create your own font with SPIN partner and design director Claudia Klat. On Day One, participants will work with paper, scissors, glue, pens, and paint to explore an experimental approach to find new forms of typography. On Day Two they’ll import the outcomes into the digital world and develop the letterforms further, resulting in refined letterform(s). The final product will be a collective alphabet of expressive/experimental letterforms.
Workshop participants will also learn:
- How to use analog tools when working on a digital product
- What criteria can be used to evaluate conceptual design
- What SPIN’s experimental approach is all about
Claudia Klat — design director and partner of SPIN design studio. Claudia works alongside SPIN founder Tony Brook and the rest of the team on identities, books, marketing campaigns, motion graphics, packaging, and websites. Her personal experience includes projects for the BBC, Crafts Council, Dig Delve, Ministry of Sound, Proa Foundation, University for the Creative Arts, and Wallpaper magazine.
The workshop is well suited for graphic designers and anyone who is interested in type and graphic design. It will be held in English. Please note that translation will not be provided.
Participants will work individually and have group discussions. They are required to have a basic knowledge of one of the following graphic editors: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, or Adobe After Effects.
