Otkritie x Strelka Film Festival. Freak Show

An outrageous teenage comedy about the fight for freedom of self-expression

The protagonist of the film, a teenage boy named Billy, transfers to an extremely conservative, elite school. His outrageous outfits, matching the looks of Lady Gaga or David Bowie, and defiant behavior, are not understood by his classmates. Over time, dislike turns into real bullying. In response, Billy, determined to fight for his uniqueness, making himself up with a dense layer of glamour, decides to participate in the School Queen contest.

The film was selected for screening at the Karlovy Vary Festival in 2017 as part of the ‘Another View’ programme, and in the same year was nominated for a prize in two sections of the Berlin Film Festival, 'Best First Feature' and 'Generation 14plus'. This is Trudie Styler's directorial debut, although she has previously worked extensively in the movie industry: she was a producer of ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘Snatch’ and ‘American Honey’, which was nominated for the Palme d'Or and received two prizes in Cannes last year.

The Russian premiere of the film will be held as part of the Second International Otkritie x Strelka Film Festival, supported by Otkritie Bank and MasterCard. The programme includes Russian and Moscow premieres of films from different countries selected by curator Stas Tyrkin. Winners of and participants in international competitions, including festivals in Cannes and Toronto, and the Russian Kinotavr and Dvijenie festivals, will be presented in a series of ten film screenings.

The curator of the film festival is Stas Tyrkin: film critic, member of the Moscow International Film Festival selection committee, program director of the Dvijenie festival and curator of the cinema course at the Gogol Center.

The technical partner of the Otkritie x Strelka Film Festival, with the support of Otkritie Bank and MasterCard, is the Kinoproekt company.
