Otkritie x Strelka Film Festival. A Gentle Creature

A fanciful story about a terrible journey through a great country, directed by Sergei Loznitsa and based on Dostoevsky’s short story

A merciless and pressing film about Russia from a contemporary classic of documentary and feature films, Sergei Loznitsa. The director was nominated for the Palme d'Or in Cannes three times, including for ‘A Gentle Creature’ this year. He was awarded the Kinotavr prize and has received prizes for his documentary work in Karlovy Vary twice. The film ‘A Gentle Creature’ is a vivid and integral statement about a small person in a large repressive system.

The plot concerns a lonely heroine living alone in a remote Russian village. One day, the parcel that she had sent to her husband in prison is returned to her. Confused and surprised, she has no other choice but to go to the prison colony and bring the parcel in person to demand an explanation. The real Daugavpilssky prison, which remained in Latvia as heritage of the Soviet Union, was shot for the film. On her way, the heroine meets the caricatures inhabiting modern Russian reality: policemen, prostitutes, bandits and human rights activists (played by Leah Akhedzhakova). There is no end to the twists and turns as, indeed, to the patience of this gentle creature who is going on this difficult journey looking for justice.
