The City and the Urban Economy

Marco Kamiya, head of the Urban Economy and Finance branch at UN-Habitat, will explore how economics and finance interact with the plan to achieve urban development

Today almost 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas – and that number is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. Cities are the main creators of economic wealth, generating over 70% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Governments are trying to promote urban strategies and policies that strengthen the capacity of cities to realize their full potential as drivers of economic development, and of wealth and employment creation.

This lecture will focus on how economics and finance are linked to planning in order to achieve sustainable development. The head of the Urban Economy and Finance branch at UN-Habitat, Marco Kamiya, will explore how governance must be structured to implement integrated urban development projects and what kinds of resources and arrangements must support this. He will also present cases on national policies with an emphasis on financing, and discuss the role of urbanization ministries.

Marco Kamiya is head of the Urban Economy and Finance branch of UN-Habitat. He leads global operational and normative work on the urban economy and municipal finance. Working closely with cities, he supports financing methodologies related to planning, participatory approaches, and infrastructure finance. Prior to joining UN-Habitat, Marco worked for CAF Development Bank of Latin America in the Department of Public Policy and Competitiveness. Previously, he worked for the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC, and for PADECO Co., Ltd. in Tokyo.

The lecture will be held in English, with simultaneous interpretation into Russian.
