Discussion with leading architects, devoted to London's urban planning experience in frames of the series organized with Mies van der Rohe Foundation 

From the transformation of old industrial areas on the South Bank to proposals for the city's preparation for the Olympics and the construction of large office headquarters in the City, a myriad of initiatives have made London an attractive example in the analysis of the urban characteristics European city.

During the two-day event leading British architects and representatives of the city administration of London, responsible for the development of territories, will talk about the best projects for the development of areas in London and urban politics of the city, as well as discuss which of these practices could be applicable in other cities. British experts would also hold a workshop for students. During the workshop, representatives of the architectural and urban community of London will explore specific case in Moscow – the area situated in Moscow city center, directly opposite Zaryadie area, between Raushskaya and Sadovnicheskaya embankments.

Following a series of workshops will be developed and submitted a list of recommendations for the integrated development of this territory.


Ivan Blazi – curator of Mies van der Rohe Award 

Tony Fretton is a principal of Tony Fretton Architects, along with James McKinney and David Owen. The work of the practice includes the Lisson Gallery, Red House, Chelsea, Fuglsang Kunstmuseum in Denmark and the new British Embassy in Warsaw. He was visiting Professor, Graduate School of Design, Harvard from 2005-2006 and Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich 2011-2012. From 1999-2013 he was Professor, Chair of Architectural Design-Interiors at the Technical University Delft.     

Alex Ely is a leading authority on urban design and housing. An Architect, Planner and author of the Mayor of London’s Housing Design Guide and numerous research and best practice publications for the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment he combines planning and policy experience with a passion for good design. He was formerly Head of Sustainable Communities at CABE and continues to advise Government on built environment policy.

Series "Rethinking Europe – European experience in the city development" is prepared specially for the summer program of the Strelka Institute in partnership with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe.
