Beat Film Festival: Action Point. Citizen Jane (Screenings)

Urban blockbuster about the legendary Jane Jacobs, author of the book ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’

English (with Russian subtitles)

Jane Jacobs is a journalist and author of the book ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’, which has been on the top of any urbanist must-read lists for the last 50 years. She was the first to explain why developers in expensive jackets were destroying New York, building towers and highways. The film is built on the conflict between the humanitarian ideas of Jacobs and capitalistic effective measures of the main builder of New York – Robert Moses.

Today her ideas are particularly interesting to rhyme with the acute problems of modern Moscow: the demolition of five-story buildings of the Khrushchev era and the renovation of Harlem, street trading as a marker of living in the district: the demolition of stalls, the battle for the park and the fight against traffic jams, the small cafes between Bleeker and McDougal and the unwillingness of the Patriarch's ponds residents to see guests in their area after 11 pm.

Before the screening there will be a discussion on the theme ‘New Urbanism: Tools for Working with the City’, where participants will discuss how relevant Jane Jacobs's ideas are for the modern cities including the Russian ones.

Participants of the discussion:

Vera Leonova, Deputy Dean at the Higher School of Urban Studies at the Higher School of Economics

Alexander Ostrogorsky, architectural journalist, tutor of the Moscow Architectural School MARCH

Sergey Sitar, architect, curator

Ilya Mukosei, architecture studio PlanAR

Andrey Kurilkin, editor-in-chief of the New Publishing House and curator of the publishing program at Strelka Institute

The event will be held in the framework of the urban program of Strelka Institute and Beat Film Festival – ‘Action Point’. It is a series of documentary film screenings about cities and people who change them.
